Taking a look at all the Infinity Stones
Every since Captain America: The First Avenger, Marvel has been slowly introducing more and more Infinity Stones (Infinity Gems in the comics.) This has since been confirmed to lead up to Thanos assembling the Infinity Gauntlet in Avengers Infinity War (new name possibly coming.) So far we have seen four Infinity Stones and are left to wonder where the remaining two will show up. Let’s take a look at where we last saw the Infinity Stones in the MCU:
Watch Steve and Scott break down the stones in the video above or read the blogged out version below.
The Space Stone
What is it?
We first saw the Space Stone in Captain America: The First Avenger. It appeared as the cube known as The Tesseract. The Space Stone has the ability to open portals and create shortcuts through space and time. The Space Stone’s energy can be harvested and weaponized as we also saw in that first Captain America Movie.
Where is it?
Loki used the Space Stone to open a portal on Earth to start the Chtauri invasion. After Loki was defeated by the Avengers, Thor took the Space Stone back to Asgard to be locked away in Odin’s vault, where it remains today.
The Mind Stone
What is it?
We first saw the Mind Stone as Loki’s Scepter in Marvel’s The Avengers. The Mind Stone has the ability to manipulate minds and alter intelligence. It is believed the wielder of the Mind Stone’s intelligence will increase and he/she will be able to think on a higher plane of existence. Loki used the Mind Stone to control the minds of Hawkeye and Dr. Selvig, as well as other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in Marvel’s The Avengers. The Mind Stone is also responsible for creating Ultron and The Vision.
Where is it?
After Loki was defeated, the scepter was given to S.H.I.E.L.D. and eventually passed to HYDRA via sleeper agents where it was experimented on by Baron Von Strucker. The Avengers were able to infiltrate Von Strucker’s compound and retrieve the Scepter. Tony Stark then experimented with the scepter and accidentally created the homicidal robot Ultron. Ultron broke the casing of The Mind Stone and used the stone to create The Vision. The mind stone currently powers The Vision’s intelligence and is located on his head.
The Reality Stone
What is it?
We first saw the Reality Stone as a dark red liquid known as the Aether. Just like its name, the Reality Stone has the ability to manipulate reality and grants its wielder with immense power and unlimited capabilities. Once the Aether attaches itself to a host, it can be very difficult to remove.
Where is it?
After the events of Thor: The Dark World, The Reality Stone was given to The Collector, Tanaleer Tivan. It is assumed that it still remains in his museum on Knowhere, which is where we last saw it.
The Power Stone
What is it?
We first saw the Power Stone as the Orb from Guardians of the Galaxy. The Power Stone has the ability to cause immense death and destruction. In the past, it has been known to destroy entire planets. It’s wielder must be a very powerful being in order to control the Power Stone, or the stone’s incredible power will destroy them.
Where is it?
After the Guardians of the Galaxy destroyed Ronan, they gave the Power Stone to the Nova corps. The Nova Corps locked the stone away in a vault on Xandar, which is where we last saw it.
The Soul Stone
What is it?
The Soul Stone has the ability to manipulate souls of the living and the dead. it can also transfer abilities from person to person. The Soul Stone is the most sentient stone and is capable of speaking, moving and protecting itself without an owner. If the Soul Stone is not properly wielded, it can steal the soul of its owner, trapping them inside the stone. Souls that are stolen are taken inside the stone to a place known as the Soul World. The soul world in nearly inescapable and it is said to be like a paradise for those who are trapped inside (why would you want to leave?)
Where We Might See it
The Soul Stone has not yet been seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the comics the Soul Stone is attached to Adam Warlock’s head (something the MCU has already done with Vision.) We know we may be seeing Adam Warlock in the MCU since we saw his cocoon in The Collector’s museum. However, we think we may see the Soul Stone in Doctor Strange. Not too long ago Kevin Feige hinted that Doctor Strange may posses the Time Stone (more on this stone to come) but we think the Soul Stone makes more sense for him.
In the comics, Doctor Strange is given the Soul Gem after the Illuminati gain possession of the Infinity Gems. Since the Soul Stone has the ability to manipulate souls and also possesses its own dimension (inter-dimensional travel is something done quite often in Doctor Strange’s stories) we think the Soul Stone may be the source of Doctor Strange’s power (Eye of Agamotto maybe?), or cold be the driving force of his movie.
The Time Stone
What is it?
The Time Stone has also not yet been seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As one would expect, the Time Stone has the ability to travel to any point in time’s past, present or future. The Time Stone can also age or de-age a person or object or trap them in a time loop. The Time Stone also has the ability to slow down, speed up or freeze time. An inexperienced wielder may accidentally age or de-age all of those who surround him, while an experienced wielder may be able to exist in all points of time at once.
Where We Might See it
Cool Nerd Show’s Scott and myself (Steve) disagree on this theory. Scott says we may see it appear in Thor: Ragnarok. In Norse mythology, Ragnarok is the ultimate Armageddon of Asgard. Scott believes that they may use the Time Stone to stick Asgard into a loop, preventing Ragnarok from taking place until Thor is able to stop it. However, the Asgardians know it is not wise to keep 2 Infinity Stones in one location, so I don’t think this is where we will see the Time Stone.
I think the Time Stone will show up in Captain Marvel, and here’s why:
Captain Marvel was originally Ms. Marvel in the comics (not to be confused with Kamala Khan Ms. Marvel.) In the story line where Carol Danvers becomes Captain Marvel, she crashes her plane and wakes up in World War II times for a short while. I think Marvel is loosely taking this story and adapting it for her solo movie. This scene could happen and the Time Stone could be the driving force behind this.
This theory also makes sense since we are getting introduced to Captain Marvel in the next Avengers movie (formerly Infinity War Part I) and Captain Marvel’s solo movie takes place between the two-part Avengers movies. Captain Marvel’s solo movie could introduce the final Infinity Stone just in “time” for Thanos to assemble the Infinity Gauntlet for the last Avengers movie.
