We Have to Go Back!
The Flash returned this week after a month long hiatus, and if you ask us, it was a month too long. After leaving us with very teaser filled trailer for this episode, speculations were running high. This was the episode we had been waiting for! Dr. Wells reveals himself to be Eobard Thawne, the true Reverse-Flash and Barry and Iris FINALLY kiss. There’s only one problem: Barry went back in time and 90% of this episode did not happen.
If there’s one thing The Flash loves to do, it’s tease the shit out of us, and we’ve been getting the time travel teasers since the pilot. It seemed the time travel episode needed to happen at some point this season, and that point was this week. With Barry going back in time at the end of the episode, it appears he is the only one who is conscious of the events that had unfolded earlier that day. Barry does tell Dr. Wells that he had seen himself while running. One can only assume Dr. Wells knows Barry has reached the capability of time travel, something Wells had been waiting for so he can go back to his own time.
Wells continues to terrify the viewer with his genius intellect and cold characteristics both as himself and as Reverse-Flash. This view of Wells is deepened when he tells Cisco he had grown fond of him and viewed him as a son… right before killing him (but don’t worry, time travel erased this.) Wells knew something was up when Caitlin attempted to keep him at Jitters. This just goes to show Wells has his wits about him and will go to any length to get obtain his goal.
The main villain this week was Weather Wizard. Back in the pilot episode Clyde Mardon was shot and killed by Joe. Now his brother Mark is gunning for vengeance. Mark inherited similar weather manipulating powers to Clyde’s (cept Marks are way cooler.) The character was here simply to help build the rouges as we see yet another rouge make an appearance (Also next weeks episode is entitled “Rouge Time.)
Then we get to the Barry/Iris love story. After waiting for it the entire season, we witness their first kiss. Then, Barry reveals himself as The Flash to Iris just before running too fast and travelling back in time to the beginning of the episode. So now Barry knows how Iris feels about him, but they had never kissed. This is most likely going to result in Barry jumping the gun with Iris and getting into trouble with Eddie (as we saw in the preview.)
All-in-all, a fantastic return to the show after a month long hiatus. Flash continues to surprise us and it isn’t slowing down (pun intended.) As the viewer we are constantly left wanting more and more from Flash, and the show keeps giving. I am interested to see where they go from here in the next episode and how they wrap up this unfinished plot.
