If it’s one thing I love about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. it’s how dynamic the show is. This week’s episode did a fantastic job of indirectly moving the plot. It appears the powers of the obelisk acted as a beacon for the Kree. The Kree had sent one of their own to take all the remaining obelisks (spoiler alert, they’re gone…) and destroy any humans it may have affected.
The Kree delivers us with a short backstory on the Inhumans. The obelisks were once used to create (in)human slaves for the kree a few millennia ago. The Asgardians also detect a Kree on Earth and so Odin commands Lady Sif to act and retrieve the alien.
While the story for this episode seems more off topic than others, it moved the plotline drastically. Skye’s powers are now revealed to all S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and is seems a little civil war between Coulson and friends might be a-brewin’. Simmons (as well as most of the rest of the team) are angry with Fitz for keeping the Skye’s secret from them. Hunter finds out that Bobbi and Mack have been keeping their own secrets from him (more on that later.)
So Skye’s secret is out now, she was affected by the obelisk and everyone is shitting their pants. This could mean more splitting of the group. It appears that Coulson and Fitz (and maybe Mae) are the only ones worrying for Skye’s protection, while everyone else seems to see her as a possible threat. In the end Skye does show her loyalty to the team and locks herself up in the Bus’s holding cell. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next few episodes (or even the remainder of the season) focuses a plot around Skye learning how to deal with her newfound powers.
Before all the drama and destruction, Coulson had made it clear he wants Bobbi, Hunter, and Mack to stay with the team for good. Hunter makes the decision to stay while Bobbi and Mack seem to have other unknown plans. Hunter has caught on and confronts Mack at the end of the episode, having overheard Mack and Bobbi talk about “backup.” This makes Mack put Hunter in a choke hold until he is rendered unconscious and more interestingly poses the question, who is backup? Is it Hydra? Fury? The US Government? Something else? I think the show may be done with Hydra until Ward makes his return. I doubt they would have such an important “good guy” character such as Bobbi Morse (Mockingbird) be working with Hydra. So IMO Hydra is out. Maybe Fury has them working undercover as you know he does like to keep his eye on things. Hopefully this story will develop even more next week.
What might be best about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is the shows ability to balance its large cast. Every character gets their own screentime and every character is unique in their own way. At times we may be overloaded with intense action, but the show always brings you grounded again in keeping its roots as a spy show (and a very good one at that.) While Sif may not have been used to her potential in this episode, the plot advanced immensely and we’re getting a ton of buildup for the InHumans. All-in-all another great episode, as S.H.I.E.L.D. remains on track for a perfect season!
